December 10, 2010
This has been a memorable week. In this year, but also a remembrance of past years. This year in this church we have been struck by the passing of a young mom of a precious family in our church community, and also by a 80 something mom who is no less loved. The faith community has been affected by these two people as we are gathering to commemorate their passing, and do some of the work as part of that – preparing memorial services, provide meals, and offer pastoral care to all who need it.

SNOW!!!
Are you kidding? … Oh… wait, it’s Winnipeg…and it’s November. What did I expect, anyways?
It took me several minutes to brush the snow off my car, then warm it up a little, then start driving. I have the wonderful all season radials, but all season means different things here in Winnipeg. So as I slide around the corner, I drive with adrenalin, hoping that all will be well. I make a mental note to seek out winter tires for my little Yaris.

| It was Remembrance Day yesterday. I attended the ceremony at Vimy Ridge Park in Winnipeg. It was snowing a bit, and everyone was bundled up to keep warm.
|
| This is now November 4th. I have been away from Kildonan for a while in the early summer and then a bit if holidays through the summer. But this is now the time to get going eh?

Welcome to Manitoba June 2010! It is so wet outside these days. The ground is wet, basements are wet, and the rivers are high. Worries about sump pumps working are the most common item of discussion in coffee shops. Last weekend we saw the most rainfall in 50 years. And it looks like it’s gonna rain again this weekend.

Today I am in Killarney Manitoba, attending the Annual Meeting of the United Church in Manitoba and Northwestern Manitoba. It is a gathering of church people to get together, to sing, pray together, see friends and make new ones, and to conduct some of the business of the church. (The last part is the least interesting part.)

This Sunday (May 23rd) is Pentecost Sunday. In the church year and its special times, Pentecost is a remarkable and important time. As we are reminded by the readings in the book of Acts (chapter 2), the followers of Jesus were gathered in one place, when a great wind and fire came to the people there, and all those spoke in a language everyone could understand. That is, there were no language barriers, all could understand all others. All things are now possible. Quite a spectacle.

The Bible reading for this Sunday is from the book of Acts (ACTS 16:16-34), the story of one of the imprisonments of the apostle Paul as he journeys through Philippi. Paul has run afoul of the religious authorities and the business elite, and so he ends up in jail. This happens often to him, as he is a bit of a thorn in the side to most establishment figures of that time. His drive to include gentiles in the vision of Jesus was often criticised as well. Truth be told, Paul is often not held in high esteem by some modern day Christians due mainly to his words about women and their place and demeanour in the church.
